I work with individual artists of all disciplines to:

  • Capture a compelling vision for the future of your career in meaningful language
  • Learn to set useful goals that put you on a path to realizing your vision
  • Develop competitive grant proposals
  • Design and execute projects that are creatively rewarding and that benefit diverse communities and the artist’s career

I offer standard coaching packages as well as customized contracts that meet an artist’s particular needs. Most long-term client relationships start with a single project and develop over time.

Grant Consulting for individual artists

I provide support for individual artists in writing grant or fellowship applications through coaching sessions or by providing grant writing or prospect research services using a professional grants database.

Grant or fellowship application consultations on demand

A consultation is an easy way to ask questions about grants. You may be looking for grants that fit your work, currently drafting a grant application, or needing to address issues that have made your past applications unsuccessful.

The two buttons below lead to a brief form to fill out about your grant-related needs. Once you’ve filled in the form and made a payment, you’ll automatically receive an email to schedule your consultation.

Grant Writing Services for Individual artists

For artists looking for more comprehensive support, I provide grant writing services. Through discussions with you and reviewing the grant materials, I will work independently to:

  • Frame your creative vision and/or project goals for reviewers in a way that best meets the grant’s criteria
  • Help you develop ideas for community engagement, accessibility, or other enhancements to your work
  • Draft a project budget and narrative including revisions based on your feedback
  • Help select work samples that best display your creative vision
  • Help select and facilitate supporters who write letters of recommendation for you

Costs of grant writing services depend on the particular grant, but usually begin at approximately $900.

What clients say about working with Substrate Arts Consulting

A recent coaching client said:

  • Your communication with me about what to expect was spot-on
  • The process was clear
  • Having the shared written document worked really well for me (I like to see things in writing)
  • Breaking down the vision into smaller parts and then goals made a LOT of sense and made the vision seem less mystifying (and more attainable)

Douglas Detrick, founder and consultant

I’m a musician and writer, former arts organization executive director, and a husband and father. I live in a small rural town in Wisconsin called Viroqua, but I’ve also lived and worked in New York, NY, and Portland and Eugene, OR. All of these places have taught me different things about how communities can thrive through arts and culture. I’m a supportive collaborator who offers encouragement as well as detailed, constructive criticism.
